Discussion:
Nomad Zen Xtra not connected

I've received a refurbished Nomad Zen xtra that came without disks. I
don't see why the disks should be needed to allow my machine to
interface with the unit, but that's me. I've installed countless
drivers and what not but am not successful in getting the unit to be
recognized.

Am on XP and the machine knows that somethings been plugged into the
USB, but that's where it ends.

Anyone?

You'll need to download and install the following:

1. Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version 1.30.03

2. Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.21

3. Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.20 for Creative MediaSource

Install 1, then connect the player to the PC. Then install 2 and 3 (the
player must be connected for 2 to verify you have a Creative product).

This is assuming you are still using the v1.xx PDE firmware.

Bob: Oh, yeah, $200, and you boys drank $300 worth of beer.

I've actually tried all of that before, and redid it again. Still
nothing. Step 2 installs but when trying to find the unit, it fails.
Comes back with 'setup unable to detect a supported product on your
system.'

As for the PDE, it seems to need the unit to be plugged in and
recognized....which it is (lugged in) and isn't (recognized).

The next thing to check is whether the player (as a known or unknown device)
is listed in Device Manager when you connect. Check what appears there,
whether it is listed as working, and has a driver version.

I looked in the Device Manager but don't really see anything specific
to the Zen. I see the USB listing, but there's nothing specific to
that product.

did you get the refurb from Creative or a third party? (wondering if it
is a working unit...)

If you can spot the specific USB root/controller that mounts when you
plug it in, uninstall it and let XP detect it again. See if it uses the
correct drivers you've installed this time.
If you can't tell which one it is, you can nuke them all and XP will put
them back when you restart. I've gone this route when XP gets stupid
over my NJB3... occasionally XP refuses to mount it properly. It's 1394
but the process applies.

I was finally able to get to the right area. It shows that the devise
is under other devices, but once there, shows no drivers loaded.
But....that's what I supposedly already did before.

Follow the Update Driver routine, and point it to the directory C:\Program
Files\Creative\Jukebox 3 Drivers (this folder should exist and have files in
it, which you can verify with Explorer).

Clay, the unit was from third party, of which I am in the process of
looking into a return as it is. I was able to determine the root USB,
if I think I know what you mean, and uninstalled it. Windows
recognized it on reboot and installed normal drivers for it.

However, going through, I still had to redo the driver for the unit,
and as StainlessSteelRat mentioned, had selected that exact folder many
times before. For some reason, it's not finding what it needs in that
folder. I tried that one last week and got nowhere with it...and redid
it again. I just forgot about it.

There are 2 .inf files it pulls up, both of which offer nothing in
terms of the unit when selected. ctpd1394.inf and ctpdusb.inf.

My question would then be are these the right drivers? When I
searched, it treated the Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra the same and the
downloads I did were the same as what you mentioned above. There
really weren't any other selections to make.

Thanks!!

The rat is much more current on these things but if those are my two
choices, the ctpdusb.inf is the one to use. the other is 1394 (firewire).
have a look over at nomadness.net. a quick google found this:

They are the right drivers. Either something's wrong with the connection or
the player. If you haven't already, try a disk cleanup from rescue mode.

Also if you can, install the drivers on another PC and connect to that, to
see if the player is detected correctly.
