Weird playback problem: sounds like slowed down tape

I have a Nomad MuVo2 with a substituted 500mB drive. It has worked
fine since I bought it, used, about a year ago.

Just recently, some (but not all) mp3 files are playing back with
distortion; they are slowed down and lowered in pitch, and sound as if
they were being played on a tape player with a sick motor. This
happens only with mp3 files that I have downloaded from websites; it
does not happen with files that I ripped from a cd and converted to
mp3.

I didn't think this was possible with digital files. Anyone know
what's going on, and/or how to fix it?

What's the bitrate of the files? I'm guessing they're 32 kbps... won't
play on the MuVo². 64 kbps minimum.

Thanks for the reply. If the files are 32 kbps, wouldn't they not play
at all? Or would that explain the distortion?

They'll play slowly. You'll have to convert them to a higher bit-rate e.g.
64.
