My Nomad Jukebox seems dead

Haven't used it for a few months, plugged it in, tried to turn it on,
nothing, hit the reset button, try to turn it on, nothing. I'm not sure
what else to try. I'd hate to write it off, however, I have gotten
almost 4 years of good use out of it.

Any other ideas? Oh yeah, this is the 6 gig model, silver-colored.

Turns out that its just the power supply that seems to have gone odd.
Best I can tell, I was looking into a replacement power supply but
Nomadness.net says the correct power supply for a Jukebox is a 12v DC.
HOWEVER, the back of the Jukebox says it should be a 9V DC and the power
supply I have been using on it has been a 9V. Wouldn't using a 12v power
supply on a unti asking for 9V be asking for trouble?

Yes it would.

My original NJB uses a beefy 9V 2.0amp DC power supply. Any 9V DC
power supply of 2A capacity or better (that'll be the hard part)
should do, provided the polarity of the connector is correct and
matches your current power supply.

What page are you seeing a 12V supply recommended?

Best Regards,

The original DAP, Nomad Jukebox (NJB1):
Loading Image...
uses 9-12V DC.
They will run straight off a cigarette lighter adapter in the car or a
12V AC adapter.
Beware though, any old AC adapter may not work. Seems they're not very
well regulated and can put out too much DC volts. I know, I bought one.
Plugged in my NJB and killed it instantly. Metered it afterwards, only
to find out it made 22 no load volts.
Go with a Creative one or at least, meter the one you get *before* you
plug your NJB into it.
The internal batteries will go after a while and not charge. It will
still run on AC though.

The NJB2/NJB3 uses 5V DC

yup, that looks like mine, except mine is all Silver. I have a car
adapter for it, just trying to find one for in the house because hooking
it to the computer to load, unload it on battery power would be a total
pain in the ass. I've got other adaptors but nothing that matches what
was on it. So, I think I'll play it safe and just go shopping for a new
AC adapter.

If you're into messing with such things, there was much development on
the firmware for this unit. The last release did some good things with
power usage, battery charging, etc.
Not sure where to find it anymore. StainlessSteelRat might have it on
his site yet.
I /may/ have it laying around on one of my boxes still...

I think I have the latest firmware on the device currently. I know I
upgraded a a year or 2 ago and one of the big changes I noticed was the
volume control became a scroll wheel! I always wished there would have
been a "select all" function on the unit but I just took to making
playlists on the computer with all the songs in it, easiest way to do it
when I just want to random play everything on the player. But I'm sure
development is long since abandoned on this old player. However, I don't
plan to replace it until it dies, and it will probably be with a Zen. As
I've yet to see an iPod with this longevity!

Sounds like you have the latest.
There's a setting to turn off the charge circuit. Yours is not turned
off, is it?
It's been a long time but I seem to recall the player won't start if the
batteries are completely flat. Might try a fresh set of rechargeables or
charge them and put them back in the unit.

I bought Notmad specifically for the feature that 'shuffles' playlists.
I could create an 'All Tracks' playlist and shuffle it up to randomize
it. Once in a while, shuffle it again so I don't hear the same songs in
order...
Mine was originally a 6 gig. I put a 20 gig in it and when I bought my
NJB3, I put an 80 gig in the NJB3 and put the 40 gig I took out of it in
the NJB1.
The NJB1 is retired to desk duty now. The NJB3 only gets used on
extended trips and recording sessions, and I have a MuVo² for daily
listening... No Iplods for this guy!

Nope, that's not the issue, even tried pulling the batteries out, no
dice. Just tried it with a fully charged set and plug the AC in and it
only shows its running off the batteries, not the AC. So it seems the
adaptor is gone out, at least I hope its that and not the AC socket!
I've been thinking of getting a ZEN but for now this old 6 gig has been
holding enough for me!

If it turns out to be the socket, you can probably crack the case and
fix it. The board is fairly primitive (read:not too micro miniaturized)
so getting at it to re solder should be easy.
Pop over to news jumpingcholla com and subscribe to the nomad groups
there. A little more active than here. Couple old timers from way back
still post there.
One of them (Jake, I think) built a FrankenJukebox that used a NJB1, SLA
battery, a couple speakers, all in a bowling ball bag. Great at picnics
or long weekends. Probably have a good idea how the socket is attached.
